Interview with Swell, now on Mixcloud

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Listening to Garbage’s cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong” on stage in Utrecht yesterday (see the beautiful on concertandvinyl Insta), I suddenly realised that Shirley Manson may actually be the goth rock queen.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The funny thing is that the clues had been there all along.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since their debut album, there have always been hints of it. Isn’t Garbage’s most famous anthem, “Only Happy When It Rains”, goth in its own way? Maybe not musically in the traditional goth rock sense, but certainly in spirit. The song openly celebrates melancholy, pessimism and emotional darkness, themes that have always been at the heart of goth culture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite a more pop-oriented turn afterwards, there was always something undeniably dark and mysterious about both Garbage and Shirley Manson in particular. Unlike many female rock stars of the 1990s, Shirley never projected sunshine or glamour. Her image was colder, darker, more elegant and more mysterious.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“You Look So Fine”, my personal favourite from Version 2.0, now feels even more significant. Looking back, it is remarkably close to a goth anthem. The piano, the dramatic chord progression, the romantic fatalism and the slow emotional build all evoke the same beautiful sadness found on many goth and post-punk records over the last forty years. At times, it even feels closer to The Cure’s “Disintegration” than to most alternative rock records of the late 1990s.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then, if you jump to Garbage’s two most recent albums, both widely considered among the strongest records of their career, the goth connection becomes even more obvious.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the latest album, songs such as “Have We Met (The Void)” feature heavy bass lines, dark keyboards, atmospheric piano and lyrics filled with existential unease. The song would not feel out of place on many modern darkwave or post-punk records.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And what about “The Day That I Met God”? The title alone sounds goth. It immediately brings to mind the fascination with religion, spirituality, guilt and symbolism found throughout the history of goth rock, from Christian Death’s “Only Theatre of Pain” onwards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the previous album, “No Gods No Masters”, even the title points in that direction, we find “The Creeps”, another song that sits comfortably within goth and darkwave territory. And I almost forgot the Patti Smith cover of “No Horses<em>“</em>. If there is one Garbage song that fully embraces goth aesthetics, this might be it. The apocalyptic lyrics, the sense of impending collapse, Shirley Manson’s dramatic vocal delivery, the dark electronic atmosphere and the almost funereal mood throughout the song all place it very close to the territory explored by goth, darkwave and post-punk bands.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then we come back to that cover of “Lovesong” in Utrecht.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For me, this was the moment everything suddenly clicked into place.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shirley’s voice was pure and effortless. The entire band was dressed in black. Shirley wore a black Scottish kilt adorned with chains, towering black boots and carried herself with the confidence of a warrior queen. Her platinum-blond hair contrasted against the darkness, making her look almost like a Viking warrior emerging from some gothic fantasy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And what is more goth than performing one of the defining songs from The Cure’s catalogue?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, Robert Smith has spent decades rejecting the goth label. Yet “Disintegration” remains one of the most influential albums in goth culture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if I needed one final piece of evidence, there is this: The Cure invited Garbage to perform as part of their Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at the Royal Albert Hall recently. Robert Smith has always been selective about the artists he champions, and Garbage’s presence there feels less like a coincidence and more like an acknowledgement of a shared emotional territory.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So now I finally understand why I have loved Garbage for the last thirty years.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The revelation in Utrecht was not that Garbage had suddenly become goth.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The revelation was that they may have always been goth-adjacent, carrying the spirit of goth, post-punk, dark romanticism and melancholy beneath the surface of alternative rock.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And Shirley Manson may well be the closest thing the last thirty years of alternative rock have produced to a modern goth rock queen.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This concert was a revelation.</p>

The Record Club

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Back in 1994, for many of us in Europe, Swell’s&nbsp;<em>41</em>&nbsp;felt like the beginning of something new. We were just coming out of the historic shoegaze era, though we did not fully realize it yet, with bands like&nbsp;My Bloody Valentine,&nbsp;Ride,&nbsp;Slowdive,&nbsp;Chapterhouse&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lush&nbsp;redefining guitar music.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then Swell arrived and completely blew our minds with&nbsp;<em>41</em>: music deeply rooted in&nbsp;San Francisco, yet somehow touched by shoegaze as well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We were lucky without even knowing it. Around the same time,&nbsp;Mazzy Star&nbsp;was reinventing psychedelic rock,&nbsp;Red House Painters&nbsp;was helping shape slowcore, and Swell was creating something entirely its own, somewhere between slowcore, desert rock and shoegaze.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ironically,&nbsp;<em>41</em>&nbsp;reached France and much of Europe late because of poor local distribution, which also led many of us to discover that the previous album,&nbsp;<em>…Well?</em>, was just as beautiful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We were eventually lucky enough to see Swell live during the&nbsp;<em>41</em>&nbsp;European tour, when the band was becoming a true cult phenomenon. French audiences, especially, formed an incredibly loyal fanbase, and they still are today.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Swell forever.<em> </em></p>

Swell “41” (1994)

<p><em>We would say today that <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Bernard Lenoir</span></span> has been the most important influencer in France, if not in Europe, for indie rock music in the 90’s. He is known as the “French John Peel”. But for us he was just Bernard Lenoir.</em></p>
<p><em>Bernard Lenoir was the lead presenter and radio host for both a fantastic show on <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">France Inter</span></span>, one of the most important radio stations, and the “Black Sessions”, live sessions that were a competitor to the <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Peel Sessions</span></span>. <p><em><span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Pale Saints</span></span>, <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">The Jesus and Mary Chain</span></span>, <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Ride</span></span>, <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Catherine Wheel,</span></span> these are the first songs played in a 1992 show I just picked up by chance and am listening to now. Wow. <p><em>To put this in context: except <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">The Cure</span></span>, we did not have access to most indie rock albums in the 80’s, not even mentioning the EPs. Even The Jesus &amp; Mary Chain “<span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Psychocandy”</span></span> was an import from the UK, costing literally three times more than a normal CD. Vinyl was dying, so finding indie rock vinyl records was even more difficult, almost impossible. And if you didn’t live in Paris, it was worse.</em></p>
<p><em>So I was flying to the UK to visit my parents’ friends and do CD shopping there, a nirvana. Limited edition EPs, affordable second-hand indie rock albums… record stores were flooded when it was a dry season in France. <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Fnac, a major French record store chain,</span></span> did improve things a bit from the end of the 80’s, and then more in the early 90’s. But Bernard Lenoir always had first access to new EPs and albums that still had little or no distribution. So we were… recording the radio show on cassette tapes to build our own indie rock compilations. Crazy scarce times.</em></p>

Only <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Les Inrockuptibles</span></span> provided great visuals of our favorite bands. So when we were lucky enough to get tickets to the concerts of <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Ride</span></span>, <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">The House of Love</span></span>, <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Moose</span></span>, <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">The Boo Radleys</span></span> or even <span class="hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline"><span class="whitespace-normal">Blur</span></span> (400 people crowd on the first album tour), it was a full discovery, the music, the clothes, the style, the speech, the feeling.</em></p>
<p><em>Bernard Lenoir gave us access to the intimacy of the record world, the behind-the-scenes we couldn’t reach, with guests we couldn’t dream of hearing, bands we deeply cherished.</em></p>
<p><em>Without this window into indie rock, we would have been, and remained, 95% blind and deaf. That’s how important Bernard Lenoir has been.</em></p>
<p><em>Bernard Lenoir is now enjoying a happy retirement in Biarritz, fully deserved. There is a recent documentary, still very confidential in its distribution, but hopefully it will reach a wider audience soon. Can’t wait to hear news again from this major figure of rock.</em></p>

Bernard Lenoir, the French John Peel

<p><em>The good thing about aging is that we can look back.</em></p>
<p><em>Back to when we were waiting for the new issue of Les Inrockuptibles, published every two months at the time.</em></p>
<p><em>Back to when we hesitated to fly to Las Vegas and missed the last concerts of Frank Sinatra.</em></p>
<p><em>Back to a few weeks ago when we realised the new U2 EP was actually quite good, even if the media mostly ignored it. Like it or not, U2 remains one of the most important bands in rock history.</em></p>
<p><em>Back to when we missed the last concert of Lee “Scratch” Perry, he missed his flight, the show was cancelled, and he passed away soon after.</em></p>
<p><em>Now we have a new Morrissey album. Once again, most critics are destroying it.</em></p>
<p><em>But guess what: when he dies, he will be revered as a rock god, with one of the most unique voices in rock history.</em></p>
<p><em>For now, he is still alive, and many magazines pretend not to care.</em></p>
<p><em>But if you like Morrissey (I do), you don’t care what journalists say anyway.</em></p>

The Morrissey Legacy

<p><em>Grauzone Goth Rock Festival in The Hague (NL) never disappoints. The now well-known cat-head logo makes us anticipate great shows and great music every single year during the cold, dark month of February. A goth rock festival in June, when dozens of bars are serving finger food and drinks on the beach just a few kilometres away, would make far less sense in terms of atmosphere, of course.</em></p>
<p><em>So yes, it’s cold outside, and it’s cold (wave) inside as well.</em></p>
<p><em>And this time, even Sunday evening, usually a moment to cool down after two intense nights of concerts, was fantastic. Across up to six or seven stages, artists performed simultaneously or with overlapping sets, making tough choices part of the experience. It felt like a race to catch the right band at the right place at the right time.</em></p>
<p><em>We arrived late and missed Years of Denial (argh), but we got chills three times. First with Youth Code (USA) and their pure punk / hardcore / metal energy, wow! Then with the very ’80s (is it Madonna?) vibe of Male Tears (USA), who ended with a trio of very dark goth dance tracks, a danceable Joy Division meets Ministry! And finally, Apero (Germany) destroyed everything with their raw punk rock, anarchy in The Hague, pogoing, fun and violent at the same time, excellent sound, great songs.</em></p>
<p><em>You could feel it immediately when “10:15 Saturday Night” by The Cure was played by the DJ before the first concert, and both young and not-so-young people in the crowd were singing every lyric by heart, you knew you were in the right (post-)punk place. Huge congratulations to Natasja and her partner for successfully setting up, year after year, the best goth rock festival in Europe, by far.</em></p>
